John was a good friend in school. I remember him in sophomore cross-country. He improved his time incredibly quickly but humbly stated that he wasn't all that good. Always a positive attitude. What a loss.
We were just casual friends in school, but near the end of senior year we decided to travel through Europe that summer. John bought a VW Bug and we drove around seeing the sites, staying in youth hostels, diving into a glacial lake on a bet and just having a great time. John's parents sent him on the trip to try to dissuade him from following his grandfather's footsteps into a career in the military. It didn't work, but bootcamp and a tour of duty in Germany was enough for John. He was a great guy and died too soon.
